What We Do

Rain or Shine

Freedom Steps is a community, heartfelt tribute to the men and women on the front lines defending our country. Some walk, some run, some jog, while others push strollers along the course in all types of weather. We participate together in the rain, wind, cold, sun, and heat, in all types of weather, just like our armed forces.

How It Started

The Willow Grove VFW Post 3612 held Freedom Steps 5k for the first time in September 2008, following their receipt of a state grant to use to benefit deployed troops. Post 3612 had a close connection with active troops based at Willow Grove NAS-JRB and with what is now the Horsham Air Guard Station. However, over time Freedom Steps grew larger becoming its’ own entity and official 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Raise Awareness

Freedom Steps focuses on the men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our freedom. The money raised through the 5K is used to purchase supplies and cover shipping costs to our deployed troops. But the support does not end once they come home. Freedom Steps tries to reach out to our veterans as well to remind them of the community support that exists. We also reach out to local organizations and businesses to gain their support for our outreach and show a greater sense of community support for these brave men and women.

Growth Over The Years

Over the last 15+ year our organization has grown from a race of only 45 participants to our largest race to date of almost 300 participants. To date we have shipped over 1,000 boxes around the world to over 30 countries including: Iraq, Afghanistan, South Korea, Japan, Germany, Qatar, Ethiopia, and Turkey. We have also sent boxes to those aboard US naval vessels and to US Coast Guard cutters.
